iPhone Mail Settings
If you have an iPhone, you can easily add your email account if you’re using one of the default emails under the Mail, Contacts, Calendars setting, namely GMail, Yahoo Mail, and AOL. And I guess MobileMe, though I wouldn’t say it’s a common mail account used.
For Canadians, a lot of people have an email account from their Internet Service Provider, like Rogers, Bell or Telus for example among others.
It should be pretty straightforward to setup your email actually since you can just check the settings on your computer if you’re using a mail client such as Microsoft Outlook for example. If the iPhone is looking for the incoming mail server, just check it on your mail client’s settings. If the iPhone is looking for the outgoing mail server, check it in your settings again. But I guess some people are just not very technically savvy that they have no idea what and where to find that, and I understand that.
Now, what would the world do without technical support people, right? LOL.
Anyway, here’s a compilation of the required mail settings of the most common email providers in Canada.
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Other > Add Mail Account
Make sure you add in your Name, Address (Email address, not home address!), and Password. Description is optional. Select Save.

Outgoing (SMTP) Server: relais.videotron.ca [port 25]

Obviously, when you have a username, you should also put your password in the Password section. Just leave the other settings I haven’t mentioned here as default.
Take note that the Outgoing (SMTP) Server will only work over a WiFi connection. If you’re sending out email through your wireless mobile phone network provider, you would need to add their SMTP server, e.g. Rogers Wireless uses smtp.rogerswirelessdata.com [port 25]. Check with your network provider for this setting.
Remember, if you’re having trouble sending email, try turning off your WiFi, then it should usually work fine, as long as you have your network provider’s SMTP server configured.
Additionally, if you have a work email, that usually means you might have to add your email by going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Microsoft Exchange. Take note, only one Exchange ActiveSync account can be configured on the iPhone. Contact your company’s Mail Administrator for this.

OK your above blog about shaw email on iphones……ya it doesnt work…..I cannot get anything to work and get my shaw mail coming through my Iphone!!!!!!!!

Shaw emails have a known issue that they tend not to work properly on the iPhone especially for outgoing email.
If you’re not receiving incoming mail at all but you’re receiving mail through your mail client on your computer (like Microsoft Outlook), make sure you check the setting that it should “leave a copy of messages on the server” on Outlook (or any mail client you’re using). Because what happens when this setting isn’t turned on is that once you’re emails are downloaded to your computer, you won’t be able to download them to the iPhone.
And make sure WiFi on your iPhone is off when you’re setting up your Shaw email.

Hello,
I just got a new iphone today and have been unable to get eastlink email on it… I can get “incoming” but have tried just about everything to get outgoing email working, but to no avail…. I googled “iphone eastlink email” and landed on your site…
Was very excited about the tip, but unfortunatly, it did not help.. and surprisingly enuff, eastlink tech support says they do NOT support the iphone… (surprising)
anyway… just wondering if you had any further advice…
hoping to avoid switching all my internet, home phone and cable…

What is your mobile carrier provider? What kind of error message are you getting?
If you are trying to send email over wifi, you can use the smtp setting I have listed above. If you are trying to send over the wireless carrier, you need to add their outgoing smtp server setting.
October 21, 2010 at 8:40 pm
What do I use for pop. On iPhone a shaw email address on a bell iPhone incoming i know is pop.shaw.ca
October 21, 2010 at 9:50 pm
Sorry, but for sending outgoing email from the iPhone on the Bell network, I do not have that information as I am a Rogers subscriber. Please contact your Bell iPhone technical support.
However, if you’re sending email over WiFi, you can try checking the SMTP server from the link I listed above and use that, but I can’t guarantee it’ll work as Shaw emails tend not to work properly on the iPhone.
Good luck!
July 16, 2012 at 7:09 pm
also check if theyre logged in to their home wifi.. as some emails need to have a different configuration when sending over a different isp connection.. like for example time warner cable emails.. they need to have a different outgoing server when sending from a different isp connection.
October 25, 2010 at 3:16 pm
A follow-up to this — I checked Bell’s website and found that Bell Mobility’s default SMTP server (for outgoing mail) should be mail.1xbell.ca
November 4, 2010 at 11:46 am
I have the same issue here, the error recieved is the folowing:
“Cannot Send Mail – A copy as been placed in your Outbox, The recipien “recipienemail” was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying,”
I’m on Rogers wireless network, I have many mail account… 2 Videotron, Aliant, Gmail.
all the mail is recieved correctly over the Rogers Wireless network but I’m not able to send mail to Videotron or Aliant.
Seems the same issue as on a home computer, like my situation at home…
I had to configure my Outlook as folowing:
incoming for Aliant: Alian POP
Outgoing for Aliant: Videotron SMTP
We have to use the internet connection provider SMTP server to send mail,
I had to contact my wireless service provider to ask them the ougoing email server (SMTP) and any specific configuration needed.
the answer is :
use smtp.rogerswirelessdata.com as SMPT server and the issue is resolved…
and it does work…
BTW Great work! I love this site, now in my favorites 😉
November 5, 2010 at 1:51 am
Thanks, Remi! Great to hear your email is working.
November 4, 2010 at 4:53 pm
I forgot to say, this configuration valid when using the wireless provider connection(rogers, bell, telus…)
it may not work when connected to a wifi internet source (videotron, cogeco, bell internet…)
November 5, 2010 at 1:58 am
That is correct. When you’re in a non-WiFi area, the wireless mobile provider smtp will work.
If you’re in a WiFi area at home, it may not work because the WiFi acts as the primary connection. The internet service provider’s smtp (Videotron, Cogeco, etc.) may work on the other hand.

Have set up work email account on my iPhone using MS Exchange Server option. All of my incoming mail shows up, as do my contacts and my calendat. Problem is I cannot send anything via this account on my iphone. I get the following message. Canno Send Mail Check the setting for the outgoing servers in Setting > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. But I have no idea what to look for when I get there??????
November 18, 2010 at 6:59 pm
Do you have other email accounts setup? It may be trying to send out the email through your other account if you have so you’ll have to check that. If it’s only your Exchange Mail, you may want to contact your IT Administrator at work for assistance.
Good luck!

Hello Anna,
Thank you for the help. Yes, I have other email accounts set-up on my iPhone, but I have now turned them all off. My work Exchange accuont is the only one that I have turned on, and it still will not work. The big issue is that when I follow the direction in the error message, it takes me to the set-up for the Exchange account set-up, but this set-up has no setting for out going mail. So I am not sure WHAT I am supose to be check when the error message says “check the setting for the outgoing servers”……
And at this time we do not have an IT Admin where I work,….. 😦

Just keep your other email accounts off in the meantime, and then these are some things you could try out to hopefully make it work:
– Turn on Airplane Mode from Settings (you will lose your connection to the cellular network). Then turn WiFi on. Now try to send an email. If this works, then for some reason, there could be a problem sending out over the cellular network.
– If it still won’t work, try the other way. Make sure Airplane Mode is off and turn your WiFi off. Try sending out an email.
– If still not able to send, third thing you can try out is this. Delete your work email then power off your iPhone completely by pressing the power button at the top until it says “slide to power off” then slide off. Power it on again then re-add your work email. Make sure WiFi is off.
– If again still unable to send, delete the account again and power cycle your iPhone, then re-add your work email and this time do it with Airplane mode on and WiFi on.
If all of the above do not work, there could be a setting with your work’s Exchange Server which is not setup properly or is missing something. Hope that helps!

Hello, I have a question that I can’t find the answer
to anywhere. I’m hoping you can help me. I have
a sympatico/bell mail account that goes into
Outlook 2010. My iphone is configured to also
receive mail from sympatico. How do I configure my ip
iphone and my server so that once I read my mail, I
can delete it at the two places (like the blackberry
torch does) instead of having to read all the mail
twice? Thanks very much.
December 7, 2010 at 2:55 am
Hi Karen, this is only possible if you’re using an IMAP type of email account. From what I am aware of, Bell Sympatico uses POP so this won’t be possible unfortunately. I suggest you check with your email provider if they have IMAP settings so you can set this up on your iPhone, however I’m almost positive that they don’t.

Hey there,
I recently got an iPhone with Bell Mobilty, and set up my shaw email with it. As you know, I am unable to send email unless connected to a shaw wifi, so shaw told me to use Bell’s outgoing SMTP server, smtphm.sympatico.ca
It lets me compose a new message and send it, but I can’t reply. It just says ‘A copy of the message has been placed in the outbox. The sender address ‘myemail@shaw.ca’ has been rejected by the server’.
Any ideas?
June 20, 2011 at 8:03 pm
Hi there Justin,
I know this is a very very late response (I used to do iPhone tech support but no longer do). Here are a couple of suggestions you could try:
-Turn off your WiFi if you don’t have it off when sending email over the network. The reason is that the iPhone will try to send out through WiFi first by default. And because sometimes for some reason, even if you aren’t connected to WiFi, it will still try to.
-Delete your mail account from the iPhone, power cycle the phone, then re-add your Shaw account.
Good luck!

Since Sympatico uses the MS servers in a very “hotmail” like manner, this set of instructions shows how to get “Exchange Activesync” working (using the server m.hotmail.com, and your sympatico email address as the username). I have not tried it out yet personally, but it is reported to work with Sympatico accounts.
http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/how-to/how-to-set-up-windows-live-hotmail-with-exchange-activesync/
January 24, 2011 at 11:05 am
But mine is a shaw email account, not a sympatico one. I need help on how to send outgoing SHAW messages on 3G as I’m rarely connected to a shaw wifi, and bells outgoing servers are not working.

Has anyone had e-mail success with the iPhone4 and Bell pop3 e-mail addresses. Was able to get them on phone but not on computers. Had to go back to old BB Curve 8330 temporarily.
June 20, 2011 at 8:12 pm
If you’re having a problem receiving email on your computer (e.g. MS Outlook or another email program) through your internet at home, you need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) for assistance.
Good luck.

How about this one, if I have both outlook 2010 on my desktop opened and my email on my iphone, I keep getting an error on outlook saying invalid password. As soon as I disable or shut off my iphone email, the error goes away and I can get my emails no problem.
October 14, 2011 at 8:32 pm
Just spoke with a Shaw tech.. here are the proper steps for it to work on an IPHONE in the Bell Mobility network.
You must update your password at your Shaw email address to have at least one upper case letter and one number in the password. Go to:
http://manage.shaw.ca/ and change your password there. then follow to
https://wmbeta.shaw.ca/ where you have to go to far right and click on PREFERENCES, then go to MOBILE ACCESS and change it to ENABLED and then SAVE changes.
It is crucial that your email address password have ONE uppercase letter and at least ONE number in the password.
If you use Microsoft Outlook or something to access your email on ur PC, you will also have to go and change your email address at that. I presently use access my email at Webmail online.
Incoming Email server:
pop.shaw.ca
your user name is the email addy w/o the shaw.ca
ur password. (must be uppercase/lower case and 1 number in the password)
Outgoing mail servers
mail.shaw.ca
your username and new password\
and then if it asks you if you want to use SSL CLICK ON YES!!!!
It should go to verifying stage and you should get all checkmarks after each entry. You are set to go and send/receive email whether on WI FI or G network.
Email me if you any questions or concerns:

I just bought a iPad (WiFi 4th generation). I cannot get the sympatico accounts to even be accepted by this machine. It does not have any cell phone capability which is fine but the settings I use for my cell phone or for my Outlook on my PC don’t seem to work here. There’s no option to enter port # of the iPad when you’re setting up an account. I could try syncing but I suspect that the problem will be the same. Any thoughts?
